Eloise was born July 6, 1929 to Katherine (Scherbenski) and Henry Giedt at Bowdle. She grew up on the family farm near Bowdle with her siblings and parents. After high school graduation she went to teachers college and taught school for a year. Eloise married Eugene Huber in June 1949 and they continued to live in the Bowdle area. Marsha and Cecil were born during that time. In 1951 Eugene and Eloise brought the family to Vallejo, California. Soon after their arrival in Vallejo, CA, Don and Jon were born. In 1954 the family moved to Napa to their new home. Eloise always wanted to be a nurse and in 1973 she earned her two year nursing degree from Napa Valley College. She also worked as a teaching assistant in the Napa Valley School system for a time. Eloise and Gene were active members at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Napa for many decades. They joined the church when they moved the family to Napa and Eloise was very active in church activities. She taught Sunday school and worked on the altar guild, and always had a hot dish ready for the pot luck suppers in the school basement. She made sure the children got to church, school and 4-H activities. Mom always surprised her family with creative birthday cakes, especially the two castle cakes with the marshmallow turrets that she made for Don and Jon’s birthday one year. For 49 years Eloise and Eugene organized the Lutheran Braille Workers groups at St. Johns. They organized the groups, packed the books, took everything to the post office and ordered the supplies. They both enjoyed doing this and got a lot of satisfaction from the work. In 2007 Eugene and Eloise were honored with a luncheon and plaque from the Lutheran Braille Workers Organization for 49 years of dedicated volunteer service.
Eloise was preceded in death by her father on August 27, 1977, her mother on January 25, 1993, her husband on January 25, 2008; her two brothers, Lester (Dick) Giedt and Wardell Giedt; and her sisters, Dorothy Mertz and Dolores Giedt.
She is survived by her four children: Marsha Huber of Napa, Cecil (Susan) Huber of Penn Yan, NY, Don (Carissa) Huber of Singapore, and Jon Huber of Green Bay, WI.; two grandchildren, Randi and Travis; and three great grandchildren: Anastasia, Mary and Eliza.
Casketbearers will be her son, Jon; nephews E.J. Mertz of Bowdle, Paul Mertz of Goodwin, SD, and Steve Giedt of Groton, SD; Grandson Travis Huber of Olympia, WA; and Eloise’s granddaughter’s husband, Michael Sider-Rose of Pittsburgh, PA.
