Erma Goehring, 93, Eureka, SD, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, February 11, 2013 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Pastor Ryan Gage leading the service. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery. Musicians will be Barry and Ronda Lapp singing “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “God be with you till we meet Again”. The congregation will sing “What a Friend we have in Jesus” and “Nearer My God to Thee”. Ushers will be Don Kaul and Duane Wanner.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub beginning 5:00 PM Sunday with a 7:00 PM prayer service.
Erma Viola Lammle, daughter of Eva (Maier) and David F. Lammle, was born March 16, 1919 at her parent’s farm two miles north and 1 mile east of Long Lake, SD. She was raised here and attended Harrison TWSHP #3 rural School through 6th grade and completed her education at Long Lake Town School. She then worked hard on her parent’s farm. She married John Goehring, Jr. on September 7, 1941 at Long Lake. They settled on the Lammle’s home place where they milked and farmed until 1958, when they moved into Eureka. From 1959-1994, Erma was employed in the Laundry Dept. at the Eureka Community Hospital. She also cleaned Dr. McIntosh’s Clinic for 22 years and the Alandy Clinic for 13 years. Mr. Goehring died June 12, 1986 and Erma continued living in Eureka, moving to the Healthcare center April 2012. She originally belonged to Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Long Lake where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. More recently, she belonged to Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka. Erma also was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Eureka Senior Citizens Sewing Club, and a card club. For four years, she was on the Eureka Senior Center Nutrition Board and later served four years on the McPherson County Senior Nutrition Board. Erma was an excellent baker, having created and sold tons of Kuchens over the years. Singing was also a favorite of Erma’s as she sang in church choirs for 60 years as well as at many funerals, nursing homes, and the senior citizens center.
Erma is survived by one son, Cornelius Goehring of Eureka; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and 1 step great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her father on September 21, 1954, her mother on January 16, 1954, her husband, one son (Steve), two brothers (Alvin and an infant), and three sisters (Ida Schumacher, Ella Schaible, and LaVera Lammle).
Casketbearers will be Jon Goehring of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike Goehring of Hay Market, VA, Glenn Goehring of Rapid City, SD, Matthew Smith of Vermillion, SD, Tyler Croach of Highlands Ranch, CO, and Gerald Gehring of Aberdeen, SD.
Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
