Delores Bernice Schuh, daughter of Bertha (Schmidt) and Henry Schuh, was born December 16, 1935 NE of Java, SD. Her dad died in 1938. Two years later, Bertha married Baltasser Schuh. They continued living on the farm near Java until 1951, when they moved into Bowdle. Delores graduated from Bowdle High School, Class of 1953. She went on to attend Northern Normal in Aberdeen, SD for one year to earn her teachers certificate. Delores married Orville “Bill” Walz at Bowdle on June 2, 1954. They settled on Bill’s farm 10 miles west and three miles south of Bowdle. Delores eventually returned to her studies at Northern and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1970. Later, she also earned a Master’s Degree. In 1970, Delores became the Selby, SD School 6th grade teacher, a position she held for 24 years. In 1991, she and Bill moved to Bowdle and Delores retired from the Selby School in 1994. She then became a valuable substitute teacher for the Selby and Bowdle School districts. In addition to her teaching career, she was also Orville’s farm partner through the years. Since September 2011, Delores bravely battled ill health. She resided at the Bowdle Nursing Home since July 2012. Her family is so grateful for the outstanding care their mom received there. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where she was an organist, Sunday school and Bible school teacher, and was active in the Lady’s group. Delores also served on the Bowdle City Council, belonged to the Bowdle Hospital Auxiliary, was on the Bowdle Senior Center Nutrition Site Council and served as its chairperson for a number of years. She also belonged to the Rock’n & Roll’n Pins Extension Club. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards at the Senior Center, and fishing (if conditions were nearly perfect). She and Bill loved spending time with family and friends in their cabin at New Evarts. She also enjoyed crafts and made lots of jewelry. Delores genuinely loved teaching and the comments that her family has heard about the lives she touched has been of great comfort to them. Her teaching excellence was recognized by KDLT TV as she earned their teacher of the year award in1992.

Delores is survived by three daughters—Colleen (Wayne) Winter of Pierre, SD, Connie (Terry) Kary of Mobridge, SD, and Jeanne (Richard) Glatt of Happy Valley, OR; six Grandchildren—Laura (Mitch) Anderson, Liz Winter, Jesse (Denise) Foster, Levi (Rachel) Kary, Zachary (Rachel) Glatt, and Adonica Glatt; and four great grandchildren—Abigail, Braedon, and Amelia Foster, and Leah Anderson.
